On December 31, 1998, Sue Northey was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a relatively rare form of cancer that affects the lymphatic system. After undergoing months of chemotherapy and radiation, Sue was deemed cancer-free in September of 1999.
Several years after treatment, it was discovered that Sue's heart was damaged during radiation. Specifically, the radiation caused scarring to the lining of her heart, resulting in a very serious heart condition called Constrictive Pericarditis. In July of 2007, Sue underwent a somehat rare heart surgery called a pericardiectomy to remove the lining from her heart. The surgery was performed at Froedtert Hospital by Dr. Eric Lilly and was a tremendous success. Since her recovery from cancer, Sue has dedicated much of her spare time to helping others through their cancer experience. She has taught Healing through Journaling workshops at Froedtert Hospital's Small Stones Resource Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and has spoken at a number of different events sponsored by such organizations as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, and Froedtert Hospital. Sue sits on boards at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the Medical College of Wisconsin, the Froedtert Foundation, and Froedtert Hospital. Sue has received two special awards that recognize her accomplishments as a marketing professional, as well as her concerted efforts towards raising awareness and funds for cancer research. The Business Journal honored her as Milwaukee's Woman of Influence in 2002 in the Inspirational Leader category and the Association for Women in Communications honored Sue as The Leading Change Business Leader in 2004. Sue is a marketing professional at a large Midwestern advertising agency and lives with her husband John and her three children, Bryan , Matthew, and Katelyn.
